the sweet wait before the much desired harvest
Here we are! Veraison is the period in which wine grapes, white or black, begin to change their color. We are in the phenological phase (Phenology is the science that studies the various phases of the development cycle of a plant in relation to the seasons, the environment and the climatic trend), which lasts several weeks up to over a month, which precedes the fruit ripening phase. It is a phenomenon that affects many types of fruit, such as olives, plums, citrus fruits, but which offers a very particular and evocative spectacle in the vineyards.
It is a fundamental moment in the life cycle of the vines because it is in this period that substances such as sugars, polyphenols and aromas begin to deposit in the grapes of the bunch; they are fundamental substances for what will be the wine produced from these bunches because they will give the color, the aroma, the structure and the alcohol content that we will then find in our glasses.
The veraison it is a phenological phase of the annual cycle of the vine, in particular it concerns the production of its fruit (production cycle). It follows flowering, i.e. the formation of flowers, and fruit setting, i.e. the fertilization of the flowers and the consequent appearance of the grapes, and precedes the actual ripening, i.e. the complete development of the grapes.
Specifically, veraison is the phase that begins ripening and is characterized by a series of internal transformations of the berries, with relative change in its chemical composition, which manifest themselves externally in the progressive change in color of the fruits. In essence, from the classic green colour, typical of unripe berries, the grapes gradually take on their final colour, black/red and its thousand shades for black grape varieties, yellow for white grape varieties.
The phenomenon is very fascinating and immediately visible because it does not occur simultaneously in all the grapes in the bunch and in all the plants in the vineyard. In every single berry veraison takes place at different times! This is why, in this phase, in the same bunch the berries can have very different colors from each other
Every year the grapes and the vine become the protagonists of unique, evocative phenomena that lead to the ripening of their fruits which will be able to inspire us through that very precious nectar which is the wine which will transport us and tell us about fantastic paesaggi, terre, storia e tradizioni tipiche di ogni bottiglia che stapperemo.
See you for the harvest!
